An MBRP performance exhaust system is the starting point to getting the most from your cold air intakes, tuners and other bolt-ons. Combined with an aftermarket downpipe, this system will not only sound crazy, but also show great power gains due to drastically improved flow capacity. Furthering those power gains is a high-flow Y-Pipe and large 3” mandrel-bent aluminized steel piping all capped off with stealthy 4-1/2” black tips.

Installation is a walk in the park with a lift and not too bad with a jack and jack stands, take into consideration it’s a 100% bolt-on installation with basic hand tools. This exhaust system spent numerous hours on the dyno and hundreds of miles on the street and track to guarantee the best performance imaginable. MBRP's cat-back system was engineered to maximize exhaust flow and in turn minimizes exhaust temperatures.

The new 2.3L EcoBoost engine has just made its introduction into the Mustang, but already has been proven to make huge amounts of power, but the exhaust note just isn’t there to back up the potential that rest beneath your hood. This cat-back system from MBRP will take your EcoBoost S550 to the next level with a loud, aggressive and race-inspired exhaust note.

The MBRP Race Cat-Back from Mustang EcoBoost might be one of the most anticipated video installs we've done. Making the EcoBoost Mustang sound good is definitely a hot topic and MBRP did a great job with the Focus ST so we have real high hopes for the Race System on the Mustang. Let's get it installed and see how it sounds.

The MBRP Race Cat-Back's going to bolt to your stock down pipe and then go to a set of 3" Y pipe through mandrel bends into a set of black coated tailpipes, through the race mufflers, ending in a set of the black coated 4 1/2" tips. The Race is going to be their loudest and most aggressive system and comes with everything necessary for installation.

For this installation we need a lift or a jack and jack stands, 3/8" ratchet, 13 millimeter socket, 15 millimeter socket, 5/16" allen key, short extension, swivel, and exhaust hanger removal tool.

We already have an aftermarket system installed on our EcoBoost but the removal of this will be the exact same as the factory system. We'll start by taking off these two bolts here, remove the two bolts up front for the clamp, slide it back to release the clamp, then slide it forward off the rear hangers. Because of the weight and size I do suggest getting help though, getting this whole system off. We'll start by putting the Y pipe up into place, we use the stock clamp, slide it on, make sure the plate is facing down, and we'll tighten it up just to hold it. You want to grab the clamps off the stock exhaust.

We'll start the tailpipe installation by putting the clamp on first, you want ot leave the nut the inward side makes it easier to get to. Then you want to slide the factory hanger onto the pipe, we'll put it up into the factory tailpipe hanger, and then slide the pipe over. Leave that loose for now and do the same thing with the other side.

You want to push all the pipes kind of upward, get everything lined up, and then tighten the clamps. Now I'm going to re-install the top bolts for the rear hangers. Now we can move on to the tips. With the pipes lined up we can install the tips now. Put a little lubricant on the outside of the pipe, it'll make it easier to get the tip on, they're going to be a little bit tight because of the black paint. Get the tip lined up where you want it and then tighten it down and our installation's finished. Now let's see how it sounds. When you first fire it up at idle you're going to notice it's a deep tone. We're used to the Race being real loud and aggressive, in this case it's actually got a very deep tone at idle. When you rev it up, same kind of thing, it's actually a lot deeper than I expected, it is reminiscent of the EcoBoost system that was on the Focus ST that I'm a big fan of. Now let's take it out on the road.

The first thing you'll notice about the MBRP Race System is how deep of a tone it is. Every time we do a video on EcoBoost Mustang with the exhaust system, the first question we get is which one sounds most like a V8, well none of them will because it's a 4-cylinder turbo, you're just never going to get that V8 sound but if you want a deeper tone the closest thing you're probably going to find to that V8 sound is going to be this MBRP Race. It really has a nice deep tone when you're cruising. Going through the gears it has a great sound, you can really hear the turbo through the exhaust system, like I said it has a lot of depth to it. It definitely doesn't sound as 4-cylinder as some of the other ones that we've done. I'm in sixth gear, cruising at 2,000 RPM, you can still hear it, it's not like some of the systems where it goes completely silent at 2. You're not getting a real deep drone out of it, you do hear it a little bit, which seems to be typical of any of the systems, even the V8 systems.

If they're going to have a deep tone the trade off is you will hear them a little bit on the highway as well. If you have an EcoBoost Mustang and you're looking for that loud aggressive sound, really that turbo sound but still kind of keep a deeper tone, definitely check out the MBRP Race System, it's an excellent choice to give you, like I said, a nice deep, rich tone. Doesn't really have a lot of that turbo 4-cylinder sound a lot of the systems have.
