The 1982 Mustang saw more changes than the previous third-generation years, as Ford continued to optimize the platform with modest revisions. The most notable changes to the line-up were those relating to the engines. Most importantly, the popular 302 V8 was added to the lineup once again, after several years of not being available in the Mustang. This motor was rebranded the High Output (H.O.) V8 and was optimized for an additional 18 horsepower from its last appearance four years ago. It ended up being the most powerful Mustang made in many years. A TRX handling suspension was introduced and the Mustang's GT trim also returned for 1982. The 302 engine and GT trim were important for Ford’s marketing message, with many ads declaring that “The Boss is Back.”

However, despite the many changes, sales continued to drop, with only 130,418 sold total (a year-over-year decrease of about 33%). It’s worth noting that the percentage of V8 sales rose significantly with the H.O.'s addition. Despite this, there are still plenty of Fox Bodies on the market today that are ready and waiting to be cleaned up and given new life.
