After the public outrage from a proposed front wheel drive design, the 1987 Mustang was left in its rear wheel drive configuration but received a mid-cycle refresh to its visual design. The shape was not a drastic departure from the previous Fox Bodies, though the “four-eye” headlight arrangement was dropped. In fact, the refreshed model was much more aerodynamic than the previous iteration, lending itself to a more streamlined and sleek look. The LX trim was a bit more restrained, while the GT was enhanced for a bolder look with some more aggressive ground effects.

There was a complete overhaul of the interior as well, including a new instrument panel, knobs, steering wheel, armrests, door panels, and more. Under the hood, the engine saw some revisions, particularly in the V-8, while the V-6 was completely eliminated. The optimizations to the motor created significant acceleration and handling improvements. Sales dropped for 1987, despite the refresh, to 159,000, which was 65,000 lower than the previous model year.
