The Fox Body design was starting to show its age, and there were very few revisions made for the 1992 Mustang. In fact, the only change of major note was the addition of color-keyed body side moldings and bumper rubstrips on the LX, which were designed to enhance the appearance slightly.

A few options were deleted from the line-up as well, specifically the classic whitewall tires and wire wheel covers. Minimal updates and economic conditions that saw U.S. unemployment at a moderate peak in 1992 only hurt Ford’s sales. A paltry 79,280 Mustangs were sold, dropping sales to the lowest level in the history of the model.

To help combat this, Ford offered an LX convertible that was alternately known as the Summer Edition, Limited Edition, or Feature Edition. For $850, you got special Vibrant Red paint, white leather interior, white wheels, and a special edition wing. Just over 2,000 units were produced.

Despite these minimal changes and lukewarm reception at dealerships, the Mustang continued to receive accolades and lead the pack in value and performance versus similar cars in its category. In fact, the 1992 Mustang LX was the most affordable and quickest contender when journalists pitted eight sport coupe models against one another.
