1997 Mustang Parts

There were very few changes made for the Mustang’s 1997 model year. Alterations included the interior color scheme being changed from two-tone to monotone, a passive anti-theft system being added, new 17-inch diamond-cut alloy wheels, and a few slight color alterations on convertibles. The engine, which was all-new last year, and the overall exterior design were entirely unchanged. Sales of the pony car continued their nosedive, down another 20% to 108,344 for the model year.

The 1997 Mustang maintained the three trims from years past. The base model, which was powered by a 150 horsepower 3.8L V6, was the cheapest and made a strong value proposition to entry-level buyers. The next step up from the base model was the 1997 Mustang GT, which was powered by the new 4.6L modular V8 that was released the year prior. This 2 valve V8 was small and light, yet still only made modest power compared to the competition, which likely contributed to some of the sales losses for the 1997 Mustang.

The real power in the 1997 Ford Mustang came from the top-of-the-line Cobra version. This hand-assembled special edition featured a 4 valve version of the same V8, which was able to produce a much nicer 305 horsepower and 300 ft/lb of torque, giving owners much more power at their fingertips. While the Cobra came equipped similarly to other 1997 Mustangs, with only upgrades for performance, it was still reasonably priced to keep it accessible to mainstream consumers.
