After numbers dropped noticeably the year before, Ford made a few adjustments to the Mustang line-up to boost sales. There were some moderate adjustments to option packages and colors, but the biggest news came from two new trim variants. The most exciting was the re-emergence of the SVT Cobra model, internally known as the “Terminator”. Performance was increased in a major way, up to 390 horsepower and 390 lb-ft. of torque. It was also the first Mustang to receive an independent rear suspension, while also using wider tires on special alloy wheels and adding the Tremec six-speed manual transmission from the Cobra R model of a few years ago.

Another new variation was also introduced for the first time since 1978: The Mach 1. This model revived the name from decades before and carried a bit more performance than the standard GT coupe, though not as much as the Cobra. In the Mach 1, the V8's horsepower was up to 305, which was a nice 45 horsepower boost over the 2003 Mustang GT. Actual horsepower may have even been a bit higher. In addition to the performance, the 2003 Mach 1 also received a retro interior and some sleek exterior enhancements.
