After a major redesign last year, most of the 2006 Ford Mustang parts were left unchanged. A few 06 Mustang parts were slightly altered, however. The biggest change was the addition of the Pony Package, which alters the 2006 Mustang parts on V-6 models. The specific 2006 Ford Mustang parts that are changed for this package include a GT inspired suspension, bigger wheels and tires, a custom grille and special emblems. The GT also gets a few new 06 Mustang parts, including several special wheel and tire packages and upgraded suspension tuning. Other changes included two new exterior colors and a few new interior trim upgrade options.

Coming fresh off a major redesign the year prior, the 2006 Ford Mustang continued to be a massive success as consumers responded positively to the retro-futuristic design. Sales for the 2006 model year hit 166,530, which would be the highest sales number achieved by the new S197 Mustangs (mostly due to the economic downturn that would soon hit the United States).

Given the recent introduction of the S197 generation, there were few changes for the 2006 Mustang. One major addition was the creation of the V6 Pony Package, which offered a custom look that was inspired by the GT trim. With unique racing stripes, wheels, tires, grille, and a revised suspension, it made a strong case to those that didn’t want the V8 engine. The GT also received an upgraded suspension system for all models, as well as the option of some new wheel/tire packages, interior trim, and two new exterior colors (Vista Blue Metallic and Tungsten Grey Metallic).

The 2006 Mustang also became famous for the Shelby GT-H. This was a revival of the Rent-A-Racer program from Hertz that ran 40 years earlier. It took a standard 2006 Mustang GT that was modified with additional power and performance, along with a custom look that was unique to Hertz. After Shelby's modifications, 500 of these special ponies were incorporated into the Hertz fleet for a year, before then being released for sale to the public.
